How to open winmail.dat files on Mac OSX

If you are on Mac OSX, you may occasionally receive winmail.dat email attachments from Windows users.

Here's a surprisingly easy way to open them. 

Simply save the file and change the extension from .dat to .pdf, eg save the file as winmail.pdf

Once you do that you'll be able to open the new PDF file in Preview, or any other Mac PDF viewer.
